Men still have trouble recognizing that a woman can be complex, can have ambition, good looks, sexuality, erudition, and common sense. A woman can have all those facets, and yet men, in literature and in drama, seem to need to simplify women, to polarize us as either the whore or the angel.

Keith told me the other day that he likes that I’m Hispanic. I just kind of laughed for a while, it was such an odd thing to hear. He likes that I am my race? I’ve never been told that before. Realistically every person I’ve ever encountered has told me at some point that I am “the worst Mexican” because I don’t speak Spanish or like spicy foods. My parents didn’t even let me have a quince because I didn’t have (what they considered) enough Mexican friends. I wanted a quince!
Is that racial profiling or what? People kill you with small phrases and small actions like that.
Any way a few times I’ve been told that the men I date must like my “Latin woman heat” whatever that means. Which has always brought up the question of if I am in fact the “worst Mexican” how is that I am still Hispanic enough to have a Latin woman’s “heat”?
Receiving conflicting messages like these my whole life have made me actually insecure about my race. I had never said that before.
I was always semi nervous to tell people I was Mexican because I knew what was coming “oh you are? You really don’t look it. I don’t believe you.” Or my least favorite “Yeah but you’re only like half, right?” No. No. No. Ugh. Why. What does it even mean to look Hispanic?
There are Mexicans in Mexico with red hair and freckles, naturally blonde hair and blue eyes! Are they not Mexicans because of their appearance?
Anyway. I’m rambling.
Keith told me he likes that I’m Hispanic, and it shocked me. I asked him why?
He kinda shrugged his shoulders and said:
“I like your naturally black hair, I like your brown eyes, I like that golden color your arms have turned since we both spent too much time in the sun last week.
I like the way you try to teach me how to roll my R’s even though I know more Spanish than you, or how you correct my pronunciation.
You’re more passionate about the stuff you believe in than anyone I had ever met before you, I don’t know if that’s all a Mexican thing, but it’s not in any of the white people I dated before you.”
I laughed at his ending and told him he was just dating girls who were basic and run of the mill and the participation ribbons of the female body.
But I felt good. For once. I felt really good about myself.
My race is hardly the biggest hang up I have, sure it can be a source of insecurity at times, but I’m not oppressed and I’ve never experienced real racism towards me.
So ~whatever forever~ I am just tired of being told I’m bad at being a Mexican by being myself.
